Green and Clean: The IIMB Campus Celebrates Sustainability
Spread over a lush 100-acre campus, Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, on Bannerghatta Road, is one of India’s premier management institutions.
While IIMB’s faculty, students and alumni are well known and respected for their achievements, the campus itself is no stranger to fame. It has won awards for its horticulture initiatives, for its documentation of flora and fauna, for its readiness to adopt and nurture translocated trees, and its sustainable practices and clean energy use.
“At IIMB, we have a strong focus on environmental awareness and sustainable living. Our buildings are constructed from eco-friendly and locally-sourced materials, we meet the majority of our energy needs through our roof-top solar panels, we implement rainwater harvesting, we have recharged several wells, we heat our water via solar power and we have a modest recycling centre, where it is the responsibility of everyone on campus to separate their waste. Most of this waste is reused as it gets composted at a biogas plant on campus, and the remainder is sent for recycling,” explains Professor M.S. Narasimhan, Dean, Administration.
“Living in a sustainable manner and integrating environmental education into the learning process helps our students understand how their decisions and actions affect the environment and enables them to make informed decisions as managers of the future,” he adds.
On June 15, 2019, IIMB students took the ‘Zero Waste’ pledge. The student mess and the department canteen have eye-catching slogans, in multiple languages, that encourage patrons to take only as much as they can eat, and a large display board indicates the amount of daily food waste and how many mouths it could have fed, in a bid to inculcate sensible consumption.
Parabolic Solar Panels
Parabolic solar panels for steam generation for mass cooking were installed in the year 2010.
They have a capacity of steam produce equivalent to 10-15kg LPG cylinders per day that helps reduce the consumption of LPG by 15%.
Bio-gas Plant
Food waste is converted into bio-gas for cooking purposes. It was installed in the year 2016.
Capacity: 400 kg /day.
Reduces the energy equivalent of 22kg LPG/day.
Rooftop Solar Panels
IIMB installed these solar panels in 2017. They have a capacity of 290 kilowatts and reduce the electricity bill by 15%.
Rainwater Harvesting
Installed in 2010, this is an ongoing activity.
Usage: Rooftop rainwater runoff reused for bathing, washing, flushing etc. except for drinking.
Ground Recharge Wells
57 ground wells have been provided.
Over the last 9 years, five borewells out of 14 which had dried up have been rejuvenated and are yielding water.
On average 20% of the total water requirement is met by rejuvenated bore wells and rainwater harvesting measures on campus.
Sewage Treatment Plant
Installation year: 2014
Capacity: 600KLD
Usage: Gardening. The entire requirement of water for gardening is through recycled STP water (100%)
Heat Pumps
Installation year: 2015
Works on reverse cycle of AC and keeps water hot 24x7
A saving of almost 50 per cent of power consumption has been achieved.
60 Compost pits
Used for composting garden waste and used as manure.
Implemented since 2015. Our entire requirement of manure for our gardens and woods is generated from compost pits on campus.
Waste Management Plant
A full-fledged waste segregation plant was established in the year 2010.
All types of waste generated on campus is segregated and recycled.
The IIMB campus, which is spread across 100 acres, has 62 acres of green cover and around 30,000 trees – big and small. The campus is home to 28-30 bird species. The lush green campus of IIM Bangalore is home to variety of flora and fauna. A nature walk on campus is sure to excite, fascinate and inspire you.
