CSITM to host two-day workshop on ‘Theory Development and Writing Empirical Papers for Top-Tier Journals’
Prof. Viswanath Venkatesh, Virginia Tech, will lead the sessions on 10 & 11 January
12 December, 2024, Bengaluru: The Office of the Dean Faculty, Centre for Software and IT Management (CSITM) and Research and Publications at IIM Bangalore will host a workshop on ‘Theory Development and Writing Empirical Papers for Top-Tier Journals’, led by Prof. Viswanath Venkatesh, Eminent Scholar and Verizon Chair, Virginia Tech - Pamplin College of Business. With the aim of enabling young researchers to author high-quality empirical research papers, targeting top-tier journals, the two-day workshop will be held on 10 and 11 January 2025, at the IIMB campus.
Overview
Theory development and the associated theoretical contribution are at the heart of most papers published in leading journals in social and behavioral sciences. Leveraging Prof. Venkatesh’s expertise, whose research stands among some of the most cited works in Information Systems – as per the Web of Science and Google Scholar, the workshop will delve into both aspects. Key elements of an empirical journal article will be highlighted, including identifying a research gap and crafting a strong manuscript. The workshop is designed for research students and faculty aiming to enhance their skills in writing high-quality papers for top-tier journals.
Objectives of this workshop:
- To learn how to develop the motivation for research and by association, a paper
- To build theory development skills and recognize the challenges in developing good theory
- To learn to write front-end (especially theory sections) of empirical papers in the social and behavioral sciences
- Time permitting, to situate the knowledge gained about theory and writing within broad the context of developing an effective research program
Structure of this workshop:
The workshop will be structured to be a combination of a lecture, discussions as well as exercises
Day 1 of the workshop will feature a lecture on the subject
Day 2 of the workshop will involve collaborative discussions and hands-on exercises to help participants develop a specific paper
Each participant will have the opportunity to share a current paper, reflect on their work, and present ideas on advancing their research.

Participants also opting for Day 2 are required to submit the papers that they wish to discuss and improve. Kindly submit an extended abstract (maximum 3,500 words) in PDF format, using the 11-point Times New Roman font and double spacing.
As seats are limited, selection will be based on the participant’s profile, purpose for attending, and the quality of the paper submitted for Day 2. Shortlisted candidates will be notified via email.

About the Workshop Chair
Prof. Viswanath Venkatesh, who completed his PhD at the University of Minnesota in 1997, is an Eminent Scholar and Verizon Chair of Business Information Technology at the Pamplin College of Business, Virginia Tech. From 2021-’24, he served as the Director of Pamplin’s Executive PhD program. He is also an affiliate faculty member at Virginia Tech India and is widely regarded as one of the most influential scholars in business and economics, both in terms of premier journal publications and citations.
His research focuses on understanding the diffusion of technologies in organizations and society. He has worked with several companies and government agencies. His most impactful project focuses on rural India and improving the quality of life of the poorest of the poor—which he has presented in various forums including at the United Nations. The sponsorship of his research has been about US$10M. His work has appeared in leading journals in human-computer interaction, information systems, organizational behavior, psychology, marketing, medical informatics, and operations management. Over various 5-, 10-, 15-, and 20-year periods (since 2001), he has been the most productive in terms of publications in the premier journals in information systems (i.e., Information Systems Research and MIS Quarterly) and best paper awards (e.g., Academy of Management Journal). His works have been cited approximately 205,000 times and about 70,000 times, as per Google Scholar and Web of Science, respectively, with an h-index of 96 and i-10 index of 158, with 23 papers being cited over 1,000 times per Google Scholar. He has been recognized to be among the most influential scientists (e.g., Clarivate, Thomson Reuters’ highlycited.com, Emerald Citations, SSRN, PLoS Biology).
