The moderator of the discussion would be Saideep Rathnam, Chief Operating Officer, Mizuho India Japan Study Centre, IIMB.

The ‘Meijin-Samvad’ discussion series involves a select group of panelists from India and Japan, who share different perspectives on a particular topic, with a larger audience.

Abstract

Over the centuries, the idea of seeking personal fulfilment and meaning has intrigued people. Ikigai is one of the concepts that stands for this aspiration: it is explained as ‘a reason for being’ because it is the place at which one loves doing something, is good at doing that thing, and the world needs that very thing, and of course one gets paid for it. The process of finding one’s Ikigai allows the person to live an ideally balanced life without any dissatisfaction, yet most of the time, it is messy, complicated and unresolved. Hence, the question arises: is Ikigai a destination or a path? This will be explored during the webinar, among other facets of Ikigai’s character and the applicability of this ancient Japanese concept to the context of the modern world’s dynamics.

The webinar will take a closer look at this multifaceted phenomenon and determine whether it is possible to find Ikigai and whether it is worth pursuing. For some, it is a clear stage after which life should be filled with harmony and satisfaction, while for others, it is a process that never ends and continues to evolve as new challenges and opportunities come along. The session will include discussing many people’s fears that the pursuit of Ikigai can reveal that their previous goals were trivial, which may lead to drive the person into depression and stress. By examining multiple angles of this issue as well as relating to people’s stories and experiences, the webinar seeks to provide a balanced view of Ikigai and how it can change attitudes and approaches to personal as well as professional development.

The panelists will provide in-depth knowledge and experiences relating to Ikigai as they explore and discuss this multifaceted concept. The participants will also gain a high-level understanding of Ikigai as well as daily use concepts that can help them experience more drive, satisfaction, connection and overall wellness in their personal and professional life. The webinar will combine inspiration and tangible actionable concepts as key takeaways in the search and development of one’s Ikigai.

Dr. Ramya Ranganathan is a poet, parent, professor and philosopher. She practices and teaches an inside-out approach that empowers leaders and changemakers to lead with joy, resilience and powerful intention.  She holds a B Tech in Electronics from IIT Madras, a PGDM from IIM Ahmedabad and a PhD from London Business School. She uses a combination of left-brained logic, right-brained reflection, heart-based presence and energy-based activations to help her students shift mindsets, unpack limiting beliefs and open gateways to new possibilities. She has published a book of poems titled, ‘I’m Choosing Life’.
