Guest Lecture by Prof. Karthik Muralidharan: India's State Capacity: Accelerating growth, improving health and more on 31 July

9 July, 2024, Bengaluru: Professor Karthik Muralidharan, Tata Chancellor's Professor of Economics at University of California San Deigo (UCSD), will be delivering a guest lecture on ‘India's State Capacity: Accelerating growth, improving health and more’ on 31 July from 4.00-5.45 pm. Prof. Karthik will delve into his recent book, ‘Accelerating India's Development: A State-Led Roadmap for Effective Governance,’ using it as a foundation for a discussion around enhancing state capacity with a focus on the health sector. The talk will be part of the ‘Health Economics: Theory and Practice’ course, a Term 4 elective offered by IIMB faculty Prof. Allen Ugargol and Prof. Arnab Mukherji from the Public Policy area, and is open to all students of IIMB and visitors as well.

The guest lecture will offer attendees a unique opportunity to gain valuable insights from leading experts in the field of economics and governance. Prof. Karthik will explore the crucial role of state capacity in shaping the healthcare sector, especially in the context of its rapid privatization over the last two decades. The lecture will also delve into how effective governance can be a catalyst for economic growth, using examples from the health sector to illustrate these principles. Lastly, the discussion will focus on potential policy implications and strategies for strengthening state capacity to improve healthcare delivery and outcomes.

Prof. Karthik Muralidharan’s recent release, ‘Accelerating India's Development: A State-Led Roadmap for Effective Governance’, delves into the pivotal role of state capacity in unlocking economic potential nationwide.

This seminal book systematically analyses India’s governance challenges, especially in delivering essential public services, and highlights how these are limiting India’s development. Drawing on a wealth of research and practical insights, it provides actionable, evidence-based strategies, emphasizing state-level reforms as critical for India’s advancement.

About the speaker
Karthik Muralidharan is the Tata Chancellor’s Professor of Economics at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). His research spans public finance and development economics with a focus on improving education, health, welfare, and public service delivery; and has been published in several world-leading academic journals. He has also actively engaged in policy advising and capacity building in India at both Central and state government levels, and in public communication of research insights through several op-eds and podcasts. 

Professor Muralidharan is also the co-founder and scientific director of the Centre for Effective Governance of Indian States, a non-profit organization that works with multiple state governments across India to improve state capacity, governance, and service delivery.  

Born and raised in India, he holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Harvard, an MPhil from Cambridge (UK), and a PhD in economics from Harvard.
