Research & Publications Office to host seminar on ‘Trumping Immigration: Visa Uncertainty and Jobs Relocation’ on 20 September

The talk will be delivered by Prof. Shekhar Tomar, Indian School of Business

10 September, 2024, Bengaluru: The Office of Research and Publications (R&P) at IIM Bangalore will host a research seminar on ‘Trumping Immigration: Visa Uncertainty and Jobs Relocation’ based on the research paper co-authored by Prof. Shekhar Tomar, Indian School of Business; Prof. Ritam Chaurey, John Hopkins University and Prof. Kanika Mahajan, Ashoka University. Prof. Shekhar Tomar will lead the seminar at 3 pm on 20 September, in Classroom P-22.

Abstract: We estimate the impact of immigration policy uncertainty in the US on the demand for workers in the sending country. To do this, we exploit the increased uncertainty around H-1B visas after President Trump's win in the 2016 Republican primary election. Using postings data from the largest Indian jobs platform, we find that firms more exposed to the shock increase their India-based job postings immediately after the heightened uncertainty. This surge is attributed to the relocation of jobs from the US to India for occupations more amenable to offshoring. India-headquartered firms lead this change and witness an increase in exports.

Speaker profile: Prof. Shekhar Tomar is an Assistant Professor in the Economics and Public Policy Area at the Indian School of Business. His research lies at the intersection of macroeconomics, trade, and finance, and I extensively use micro-data to answer macro questions.

Prior to ISB, he worked as a research economist at the Reserve Bank of India between 2017-2019 after completing his Ph.D. from Toulouse School of Economics. He currently runs a discussion series on economics called Arth Niti, where he discusses policy issues with other researchers. He also manages the Housing Price Index project that helps track the housing prices and quantity sales in India.
