Prof. Israr Qureshi, Australian National University, to deliver the session on 28 November
20 November, 2024, Bengaluru: The Office of Research and Publications at IIM Bangalore will host a research seminar led by Prof. Israr Qureshi, Australian National University, on November 28, 2024, at 11 a.m. in Classroom P22. Prof. Qureshi’s session will examine how social intermediation aids in empowering marginalized communities by bridging institutional gaps and prioritizing social impact over profit.
Prof. Qureshi’s commentary, which is based on a research program, explores the concept of social intermediation, and its role in empowering marginalized communities by connecting them to critical resources, networks, and information. Unlike commercial intermediaries, social intermediaries prioritize long-term social impact over profit maximization, focusing on poverty alleviation, empowerment, and sustainable development. These intermediaries bridge institutional voids in underserved contexts by fostering capability development, reducing transaction costs, and ensuring equitable access to markets and services. Additionally, the commentary highlights the transformative potential of digital technologies in social intermediation, highlighting how they enable marginalized groups to access markets, gain essential skills, and reduce reliance on exploitative intermediaries. Theories such as affordances, socio-technical systems, and sociomateriality are leveraged to understand how digital tools can enhance social value creation in these communities.

Israr Qureshi is a Professor of Social Entrepreneurship and Digital Development at the Australian National University. His research focuses on social value creation through social entrepreneurship, indigenous entrepreneurship, and digital social innovation, emphasizing inclusive leadership in driving social change, particularly in poverty alleviation, social inclusion, and empowerment. He has secured over $15 million in research funding for projects examining how social entrepreneurs and non-profits use digital technologies to create impact, particularly for marginalized communities. His extensive research output includes 15 FT50 journal publications, highlighting his leadership in the fields of social entrepreneurship and digital innovation, with a focus on global challenges such as climate change.
