Centre for Public Policy to host seminar on ‘Geopolitics and International Trade’ on 22 April
Ambassador Dr. V. S. Seshadri to deliver the talk
17 April, 2025, Bengaluru: The Centre for Public Policy (CPP) will host a seminar on, ‘Geopolitics and International Trade’, at 3.30 pm on 22nd April 2025, at Q-101. The talk will be led by Ambassador Dr. V. S. Seshadri.
About the talk: Geopolitical contestation and the search for economic security have begun to drill holes through the international trading system – and the holes are steadily getting bigger. Economic efficiency and comparative advantage that defined the era of globalization are giving way now to economic resilience and trust as well. Economic as well as manufacturing concentration elsewhere is giving rise to concerns about dependence and becoming subject to coercion.
The three global trading majors – China, the European Union and the United States – are acting very differently on trade and trade policy fronts. The arrival of President Trump 2.0 and his resort to use of tariff as a tool to reconfigure and rebalance US’s trade with its partners, have further elevated elements of unpredictability and arbitrariness in the trading world. All this is sending confusing and conflicting messages to the rest of the world, including India. The lecture will seek to better understand the emerging situation and look at possible pathways for India.
About the speaker: Ambassador Dr. V. S. Seshadri earned his PhD in Applied Mathematics from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and then joined the Indian Foreign Service. He served in several diplomatic posts including Nairobi, Brussels, Tehran and Bangkok. He was on deputation to the Ministry of Commerce as Joint Secretary for WTO matters. Subsequently, he was Minister (Commerce) in the Indian Embassy in Washington DC. His Ambassadorial assignments included Slovenia and Myanmar. On retirement from the Government, Dr. Seshadri was Vice Chairman of the think tank Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS). Thereafter, as Senior Adviser on Trade and International issues at CII, he led a study on RCEP. Since 2020, he has been associated with the Delhi Policy Group as a Senior Fellow on Economic Security.
Dr. Seshadri has contributed several research articles and op-eds on international trade and related economic issues as well as on Myanmar. He authored a book titled, ‘Free Trade Agreements: India and the World’, published by the Oxford University Press in 2023.
