“It is not about the right thing, but about the right business”

Johar Batterywala of Deloitte Haskins & Sells takes the audience through his insights on Consulting firm and careers during an EPGP seminar held on July 27
01 August, 2022, Bengaluru: Johar Batterywala, Partner, Deloitte Haskins & Sells, led an interactive session with the students of the Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management (EPGP) at IIM Bangalore, on the topic, ‘Insights into Consulting firm and careers’, as part of the EPGP Seminar Series, on July 27 (Wednesday), 2022. Mr. Batterywala shared from his rich experience spanning two decades across risk, compliance, governance and risk advisory, during the session.
Mr. Batterywala started his talk by discussing the 175-year-old legacy of Deloitte. “Deloitte’s global revenue is likely to touch $60 billion worldwide. With more than 5000 partners in India, today Deloitte leads service brands in India. At one point in time, Deloitte used to audit 48% market capital of the country.” He also spoke about how consulting in Big 4s has evolved over the years. “Initially, consulting used to be about the advisory. However, now Big 4 firms advise, implement and operate”, he added.
Talking about evolving spaces in consulting, he briefly touched upon corporate governance, ESG and integrated reporting. “Integrated reporting has three different aspects – performance reporting, compliance reporting and sustainability reporting. There is ample scope of advisory to regulators on perspectives such as environmental, regulatory and reporting.”
He emphasized the culture in Deloitte saying that it is not about the right thing Deloitte does, but it is about the right business. “Relationships are of utmost importance in Big 4s. Deloitte is a multidisciplinary firm. Despite it being a partnership firm, Deloitte does not pay any goodwill to the retiring partner, as it wants to shape a firm for the future.”
He also spoke about a typical career trajectory at Deloitte. “Life in Big 4s starts with technical competency, followed by management effectiveness, and then leads to leadership effectiveness.” He advised students to figure out the sweet spot where they can contribute.
