“Pharma is all about life”

Shenil Varghese Pudussery of Biocon Biologics addresses EPGP students at IIM Bangalore on Insights in Pharma and Biotech on 29th June 2022
16 August, 2022, Bengaluru: Shenil Varghese Pudussery, Head of HR and Global Operations for Commercial and Branded Formulations at Biocon Biologics, addressed students of IIM Bangalore’s one-year full-time MBA, the Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management (EPGP), on: ‘Insights in Pharma and Biotech’, as part of the EPGP Seminar Series, on 29th June 2022. The session covered topics such as challenges in Pharma and Biotechnology, as well as career opportunities and future trends in Pharma.
Shenil Pudussery started the session by discussing the evolution of medicine as a product. “Before a medicine goes to the hands of the public, it goes through multiple stages of discovery and clinical trials. Clinical trials are of four phases, out of which, Phase III is the most critical. Phase III is testing on real humans and phase IV is post-market surveillance”. He added that Phase I to Phase III usually takes around 10 to 12 years, and profit is realized in the next 10 years.
He briefly touched upon the different departments in Pharma companies such as Patent and Approval, Product, and Marketing. Production is further divided into Operations, Processes, Quality Control and Quality Assurance, he added. He also spoke about the marketing cycle of medicine in India. “Patients take medicine based on the prescription given by doctors. It becomes the prime role of medical representatives to create awareness among doctors.”
He spoke at length on Biotechnology. “Biotechnology is all about the use of technology in medical fields. It can be in the form of identification of DNA or in the form of coding”. He added, “In Biotechnology the production process is standardized, but it uses natural products as raw material. It is very difficult to find the same raw material with the exact same properties. As a result, it is challenging to maintain the quality of the reference product.”
Shenil Pudussery’s talk included subjects like Biosimilar and Biologics. Talking about future trends in Pharma, he said: “Pharma is going to be revolutionized by Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Gene Editing, Precision Medicine, Gene Sequencing, Bio-manufacturing, Bio-printing, Microfluidics and Tissue Engineering”.
