IIMB hosts Policy Hackathon 2014 on August 9

Policy Hack & App for Governance, the two parallel hacking events to answer governance challenges in society, are open to all
Under the IIMB Policy Hackathon, the Centre for Public Policy, will be hosting two parallel hacking events centered on generating insights and tools for policy and governance on August 9, 2014. All are invited. The two events are:
- The IIMB Policy Hack
- The IIMB App for Governance
The IIMB Policy Hack is a team event focusing on developing data based policy responses to existing policy challenges in society. Participants are given access to a large dataset (e.g. Census, NSSO, etc.) with information on multiple domains of social policy in India. Each team chooses a policy domain and works on developing a 5 page document that identifies a key policy challenge and data based solutions to it within a 24 hour period. The data set will be announced on the morning of August 9 and the team with the best use of data (visualization and analysis) to support ideas for policy problems will be the winner. Past winners have been cited by scholars such as Amartya Sen and Jean Dreze, been published in peer-reviewed journals and been the basis of different white papers, influential blog posts etc.
The IIMB App for Governance is a new and parallel event where the focus is on developing internet/mobile/app based tools that seek to answer a broad governance challenge in society. A number of governance based challenges may be handled using online or crowd-sourced information tools and the Government of India, under its National Mobile Governance Initiative, has a deep commitment for this activity (see https://apps.mgov.gov.in/index.jsp). Two widely used examples of addressing governance concerns with web/mobile technologies are the use of the website www.ipaidabribe.com to encourage transparency in government transactions, or the Ministry Directory app that provides details about various government ministries. The specific governance issue for this year's App for Governance Hack will provided on the 9th of August as the start of the event. Along with the problem statement further data will be provided to contextualize the problem further. The team with best technology solution (mobile app, web based solution, etc.) will be the winner.
Awards: Under each of the two events we propose to announce 3 awards - A winner (Rs. 40,000), a 1st Runner-up award (Rs. 20,000) and a 2nd Runner-up award (Rs. 10,000).
