Thirty-Eighth Annual Convocation held at IIMB
The 38th Annual Convocation of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) was held on April 1, 2013 at the IIMB Campus. This year, 560 students graduated from the Institute in the presence of Mukesh D Ambani , Chairman IIMB Board of Governors and Raghuram G Rajan, Chief Economic Advisor, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Government of India. Dr Rajan was the Chief Guest at the event and delivered the Convocation address.
IIMB Director Professor Pankaj Chandra welcomed the guests and gave a report highlighting the achievements during the academic year 2012-2013. The Director acknowledged the generous support of the PGP '86 batch in pledging Rs 1 crore endowment for the institute's research & internationalization efforts. Professor Chandra announced that the new classroom complex will be completed by June 2013, and the sports complex will be ready by year-end.
Professor Chandra congratulating the students said, "The real road to contribution and nation-building begins today. We will be watching your contribution. May you never be afraid to walk the difficult path".
In his Convocation Address, Dr Rajan said, "There is indeed a fundamental commonality between democracy and free enterprise. Both guarantee participation to all, but neither guarantees power or success. Instead, political and economic entrepreneurs try to persuade the public that their product is the best one, and it is collective choice, whether by the electorate or the marketplace, which determines success."
Dr Rajan told students that India is changing, and probably for the better. "India is brimming with ideas and energy, you could teach both the west and the rest the art of combining democracy and innovative technology", he assured. He advised students to take pleasure from the work rather than mechanically strive for greater wealth, rapid promotion or increasing renown which shall give you brief pleasure.
