IIMB receives NCPEDP-Mphasis Universal Design Award 2012
The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) has received the NCPEDP-Mphasis Universal Design Award 2012 for doing pioneering work in the field of promoting Accessibility and Universal Design and ensuring life of equality and dignity for disabled people.
The Office of Disability Services (ODS) was set up at IIMB in January 2010 with the support of Mphasis for developing 'Equal Opportunity Policy', 'Reasonable Accommodation Procedure' and procuring 'Assistive Technology' and conducting other focused initiatives. The ODS is overseen by a faculty member, employs a full-time Coordinator and acts as a single point contact for any support needed for students with disabilities.
A Committee on Disabilities was set up to look at all aspects of accessibility at IIMB and coordinate all activities through the ODS. The ODS works with students, faculty and administrative staff to ensure that all students with disabilities get as good an educational experience as other students. For ensuring accessibility to classrooms and offices on higher floors, a lift equipped with features such as voice announcement, accessible control panel placement and Braille was installed in 2010. JAWS software was procured and installed at the ODS and a high quality scanner (OCR Reader) was purchased to ensure in-house scanning facility. This is used by the ODS to covert and provide all course material in JAWS compatible text files to students with vision impairment. Four motorized adapted scooters and a motorized wheelchair are available for students with mobility impairment to move around on the campus more easily.
ODS provides a 'Reasonable Accommodation Request Form' to students with disabilities to understand and asses their academic accommodation requirements. Faculty members are informed of these before the commencement of the term to ensure required accommodations are made. Readers, note takers, scribes and tutors are appointed as and when required.
A session on Disability has been included during the Orientation Week for sensitization towards students with disabilities. Last but not the least, any discrimination against persons with disabilities or rude/insensitive behaviour is taken seriously.
