Centre for Software & IT Management to host research seminar on ‘Anticoagulant Prescription Patterns in Telemedicine vs. In-Person Visits for Atrial Fibrillation: Evidence from a US Teaching Hospital System’ on 7th December

17 November, 2023, Bengaluru: The Centre for Software and Information Technology Management (CSITM) at IIM Bangalore will conduct an Information Systems (IS) research seminar titled, ‘Anticoagulant Prescription Patterns in Telemedicine vs. In-Person Visits for Atrial Fibrillation: Evidence from a US Teaching Hospital System’, on 7th December 2023, from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm. The session will be led by Prof. Rahul Telang of Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. CSTIM will conduct the seminar as part of its initiative to promote dissemination and application of knowledge for the benefit of academics and professionals from all walks of industry.

Abstract: With the increasing adoption of telemedicine in healthcare and its potential economic ramifications, the researchers study its impact on the process outcome for patients with Atrial Fibrillation (AF). They study the impact of telemedicine on the likelihood of an AF patient receiving an anticoagulant prescription during their first cardiology encounter. The researchers use cardiology encounter data for approximately 17,000 patients with almost 1,000 telemedicine encounters. They model the effect of telemedicine on the likelihood of an anticoagulant prescription using a two-way fixed effects specification that controls for provider fixed effect, time fixed effect, and patient’s demographic, clinical, and social characteristics. It is found that telemedicine reduces the likelihood of an anticoagulant prescription. The researchers hypothesized several explanations for the average result but the observed data do not support these explanations. Contrary to practitioner expectations, it is found that electrophysiologists and previously high-performing cardiologists perform worse with telemedicine during the study period. 

Speaker Profile: Dr. Rahul Telang is Trustee Professor of Information Systems at the Heinz College, Carnegie Mellon University and at the Tepper School of Business (Courtesy). He is broadly interested in how Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) digitization of information impacts consumers, firms and policy makers. He is co-director of a center IDEA (Initiative for Digital Entertainment Analytics). He is co-author of the book: ‘Streaming, Sharing, Stealing: Big Data and the Future of Entertainment’. He is recipient of the NSF Career Award, and NSA grant for work on information security and privacy, Sloan Foundation Fellowship, and numerous Google awards for studying digitization and media piracy. Dr. Telang has published extensively in many top management and policy journals like Management Science, Marketing Science, Information Systems Research, MIS Quarterly, Journal of Policy and Management, and NBER chapters. He held senior editor positions at Management Science, Information Systems Research and MIS Quarterly. He holds a PhD from Tepper School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University.
