Abstract
For centuries, scholars have explored the intersection of language and technology. From Marshall McLuhan's historic ‘The Medium is the Message’ to Sherry Turkle's contemporary ‘Alone Together’, to the large language models like ChatGPT, understanding the dynamic evolution of language, the discourse continues. The participants of the webinar will build upon the influence of language on business, offering insights from the domain of Marketing, Communication and Computer Science. From leveraging social media effectively to understanding the impact of pronouns on a firm's bottom line, the panel will also share work that underscores the pivotal role language plays in shaping consumer attitude, satisfaction, and ultimately, a company's success.
In this webinar, the panel will also discuss research on language in the information environment. A study on dangerous digital material exposes the importance of language for its nature and content by stressing that it is essential for media and democracy as well. The panel will also delve into the field of computational social science and human-centred machine learning, which provides a comprehensive analysis of language-driven technology by considering their impact from theoretical, practical, design and ethical perspectives. The session will explore how language models are changing human linguistic evolution and shaping influences on businesses, politics and well-being.
