Centre for Teaching & Learning and Sustainability Taskforce jointly conduct workshop for schoolteachers on 25 May

Workshop titled ‘Incorporating Environmental Sustainability into School Curriculum’ aimed to guide participants to integrate sustainability concepts into their teaching practices

3 June, 2024, Bengaluru: The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and the Sustainability Taskforce at IIM Bangalore jointly conducted a workshop for schoolteachers on, ‘Incorporating Environmental Sustainability into School Curriculum’ on 25 May 2024, led by Prof. Haritha Saranga, Chairperson, Sustainability Taskforce and faculty of the Production & Operations Management area of IIMB, and her team.

The transformative one-day workshop was part of the various initiatives taken by IIMB to fast-forward its mission towards a sustainable future. Altogether 51 teachers of diverse age groups and background, from multiple middle-schools in Bangalore, Mysore and nearby places, attended the workshop.

The sessions of Prof. Haritha Saranga were focused on mindful consumption and the role that children can play in abating climate crisis.

Prof. Sushanta Kumar Mishra, Chairperson, Centre for Teaching & Learning, Research & Publications and C-DOCTA, and faculty of the Organizational Behavior & Human Resources Management area, IIM Bangalore, also addressed the participants, emphasizing their role in nurturing and training young minds and citizens. Alluding to the motto of IIM Bangalore, tejasvi navadhitamastu, which translates to ‘let our study be enlightening’, he highlighted IIMB's commitment towards sustainability which led to the designing of this exclusive program to help teachers become torchbearers for sustainable practices and living.

The workshop aimed to equip Science and Social Science teachers with the knowledge and tools necessary to integrate sustainability concepts into their teaching practices. The importance of sensitizing children about environmental sustainability is paramount since it is essential for addressing the urgent challenges of climate change and resource depletion. Educating young minds will help develop a generation that is conscious of its ecological footprint and committed to sustainable practices.

Teachers, as primary influencers during children's formative years, are uniquely positioned to instil values of environmental stewardship. They can make sustainability concepts relatable and actionable, inspiring students to adopt sustainable behavior that extends beyond the classroom. Integrating sustainability into various subjects provides a holistic understanding of the interconnectedness of ecological, social and economic systems.

The workshop was invaluable in empowering teachers to take on this critical role. It helped the teachers realize the importance and urgency of sustainable practices in daily life and how they can incorporate relevant topics into their curricula. It provided a platform for teachers to learn from experts and their peer group, share their experiences, and ponder upon innovative ways of making sustainability education engaging and impactful.

Such professional development opportunities foster a community of practice among educators dedicated to sustainability, promoting ongoing collaboration and the exchange of best practices. This collective effort is expected to lead to a more consistent and widespread implementation of sustainability education across schools. Ultimately, by equipping teachers with the necessary tools and knowledge, workshops like this can contribute significantly to creating an environmentally conscious and proactive society. Through the ripple effect of informed teachers and sensitized students, meaningful progress towards sustainable living and environmental conservation can be achieved, something that is in the very ethos of IIM Bangalore.
