Abstract of talk: ‘Brand Bengaluru’, which is an initiative of the Government of Karnataka (GoK), has been the point of focus and public discussion in recent times. The larger question to that debate is, what the development goal of such an initiative for Bengaluru should be. Should it be ‘Sustainable and Liveable Bengaluru’? If that is so, then it is important to understand what mobility interventions would contribute to this goal and by how much. Should it be projects such as, signal-free road corridors, double decker road corridors, tunnel roads, etc., which are car-centric and have been the focus of GoK’s proposed interventions under ‘Brand Bengaluru’, or should it include projects such as, a dense mass rapid transit system (MRTS) network, bus priority corridors, active mobility infrastructure, etc.? The talk will help understand the interventions that will harness the linkages of sustainable transport and liveability, through various research studies carried out at the IISc Sustainable Transportation Lab, to achieve a true and holistic vision of ‘Brand Bengaluru’ as ‘Sustainable and Liveable Bengaluru’.

About the speaker: Prof. Ashish Verma has been the Convenor of the IISc Sustainable Transportation Lab (IST Lab) for more than 15 years. He earned his PhD from IIT Bombay and is currently serving as a Professor of Transportation Systems Engineering at the Dept. of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.
