Journal Article: 'Resource configurations, product development capability, and competitive advantage: An empirical analysis of their evolution' - Prof. Haritha Saranga & Prof. Rejie George

Abstract:
- This paper looks at the microfoundations of product development capabilities in the context of Indian auto component industry and how they bring about firm level competitive advantage.
- The research was conducted using primary and secondary data collected during 2002-2011 period, the latter part of which coincided with global economic meltdown and subsequently saw increased interest in the Indian market by global automakers.
- This created a natural setting wherein, the value of internal firm level resources was tested by the changing external environment.
- The study findings show that certain resource configurations facilitate competitive advantage during particular periods of time, while others do not.
- The research also demonstrates that while interactions of various product development resource factors matter significantly in providing competitive advantage, in isolation, these resources do not matter.
