27 January, 2025, Bengaluru : An IIM Bangalore PhD Programme alumnus from the class of 2024—Dr. Rahul Rao of Ahmedabad University, has won India Exim Bank’s International Economic Research Annual Citation (IERA Citation) for his PhD thesis titled "Essays on Misallocation" for the year 2023. On 20 January, 2025, he was felicitated at an award function by Dr. V Anantha Nageswaran, Chief Economic Advisor of India. His PhD thesis was completed under the guidance of Economics area faculty- Prof. Chetan Subramanian and Prof. Kunal Dasgupta.
The citation was instituted by the Export-Import Bank of India with a view to encourage and stimulate advanced economic research in international economics, trade, development, and related financing at universities and academic institutions in India and abroad.
Sharing the news, Dr. Rao stated, “I want to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude to all of my Dissertation Advisory Committee members, especially Prof. Chetan Subramanian and Prof. Kunal Dasgupta for their excellent guidance and support toward the fruitful culmination of such an unconventional thesis topic. Without their guidance, it would have been difficult for me to give such a palatable shape to the thesis in which it exists now.” He also acknowledged Prof. Ashok Thampy, Finance & Accounting area, and Prof. Srinivasan Murali, Economics area, for their constant support and encouragement. His note also thanked IIM Bangalore for its rigorous research environment, and the Doctoral Program Office and staff for facilitating a smooth PhD journey.
Dr. Rao is currently working as an Assistant Professor of economics at the Amrut Mody School of Management in Ahmedabad University. In his PhD thesis work, he studied two distinct aspects of resource misallocation. The first aspect is related to the misallocation of crops across heterogeneous productive land by Indian farmers which results in both below world average crop yields in India and higher than optimal land usage in the Indian agriculture sector. The second aspect is related to the misallocation of physical capital amongst US manufacturing firms due to misallocation of financial capital via credit markets when creditors lend based on borrower’s collateral vis-à-vis their earnings.
