The rays of learning: How IIMB got its logo

Prof. K.R.S. Murthy reminisces howthe logo and motto of the Indian Institute of Bangaloreevolved to what it is today. Since, the then Chairman of the Institute preferred Indian ethos, there was GhanapatiChantingfor the convocation, and he also preferred a Sanskrit motto. However, the motto did not match the logo which was a half black half white open book. It was at this time that IIMB was undergoing an identity shift, so the creation of a newlogo to symbolize the motto was decided. The National Institute of Design (NID) was instructed by Prof. Vaidyanathan to create a logo byreferencing the Upanishad and they came up with the new logo, a simple depiction of the sun and its rays signifying a temple oflearning that complemented the motto “Tejaswi Navidhitamastu” –let our study be enlightening.

STORY OF IIMB LOGO

What was the motivation for changing the Institute’s logo and introducing a motto?
Our chairman was very keen that there should be Sanskrit motto with the logo.

Was he for Indian ethos, Indian values?
Yes,he was.

There was also the Ghanapati chanting?
There was.He would get very good singers like M.S. Sheela to come and do the invocation, we had Professor Ranganathan’s wife sing once. He wanted classical samskara. So, he wanted a Sanskrit motto with the logo. The motto had to fit with the logo. Since IIMB was not showing up in the earlier “book” styled logo, there was confusion in the minds of people as to what the logo stood for. Was it IIMB or something else?

Now we have ‘Tejaswi Navidhitamastu’.
There is a sense of identity shift in a way--in the motto, in the actions, overall.I wouldn’t say shift in identity. The earlier logo was an open book, half black half white. The black was ignorance and learning was white. We have not departed from that but to get the Sanskrit motto into it and to get the logo in sync with IIMB, changes had to be done. That was the instruction given to theNational Institute of Design (NID), who designed the logo. ProfessorVaidyanathan suggested this motto, taken from one of the Upanishads. Once we selected the motto ‘Tejaswi Navidhitamastu’–let our study be enlightening--then the picture had to be the sun and the rays--‘Tejas’, that was how it was decided. It was to signify a temple of learning.

50th Golden Jubilee Logo Launch by IIMB Director Prof. Rishikesha T Krishnan (Dec 28, 2022)

Name – Janarthan S.

Batch Year - 2021-2023

Course – PGP

Position Held – Dance Secretary

Year 2022-2023

Please introduce yourself with a little background of how you came into dancing?

I am Janarthan… I come from Ooty, Tamil Nadu. In my initial days I was really into sports specifically athletics and in athletics I was long jump record holder in my district, so I was more into gymnastics and parkour. In my high school I ventured into dancing and dance form was break dance as gymnastics and break dance were somewhat co-related, that is how I started my journey as a dancer.

What made you choose IIM Bangalore?

First and foremost, I wanted to be in the one the best B-Schools in India. The demographics of the batch which comes here includes a good amount of people with work experience of 3 years and above so it becomes a more learning experience to be around minds that have already worked in the industry. There is a pressure of things but in a very positive way, I am getting to learn out of that pressure.

How is the day in life of a student here?

It depends on which year they are in, if you are PGP first year then before and after summer internship will be a completely different phase. Classes start at 9 am and go on till 3:30-4 pm, breakfast will be in 5-10 minutes on the go. The actual day starts in the evening post 9pm, it involves preparation of resume, placement, project-work, assignment submission etc. This goes on till 2:30-3 am at night, campus goes to sleep somewhere around 4 am, when Haneena’s and Amul also close for a while.

Do you feel extra-curriculars are popular amongst the students?

Yes, very much. I see that as a huge difference between my undergrad and postgrad, here most of the associations are run by students. It helps to get in touch with most of the stakeholders in the community, networking comes very organically in such set-up and it is a huge take away from MBA. Also being Dance secretary really helps. We have a platform and infrastructure; name any sport or activity and we have an infrastructure to do that.

What are the dance forms familiar in Taal (IIMB Student Dance Club)?

I am personally comfortable with hip-hop and coming to the club hip-hop is an umbrella under that we do Break-Dance, Locking, House Dance, Krump, Popping and Waacking. Some other dance forms that we do are Kathak and Bharatnatyam, also intercontinental stuff like Latin and Ballroom styles. We perform quite actively, in a calendar we have approximately 15-20 performances and it is a different routine for every performance. I can call ‘Taal’ one of the most active Student Club.

NameGracel Joe Kharmawlong

Batch Year – 2021-2023

Course – PGP

Position Held – Member of Student Sports Council

Year – 2022-2023

Please introduce yourself and why did you choose this School?

I am Gracel Joe Kharmawlong and I chose IIMB because it stands among the best B-school in India. Honoured to be among the smartest peers in the country. The pressure exists, but it lies to become a better version of myself.

What is the daily routine of student here especially being a PGP 2nd year student?

The excitement as a PGP 2 is very different. We end up organizing many events, instead of participating. The former being for PGP1s and other students - Club events, VISTA, EXIMIUS as some examples. Apart from that, some of the spirit is divided among students who are going for foreign exchange and those staying in, PPO'ed and the one stressing over placements etc. I prioritized subjects over timetable, so I had a hectic schedule, my classes were from Monday to Saturday. So, there was a humongous change from Year 1, but it had its own interesting opportunities. I got to choose electives based upon my interests. This kept me very motivated and look forward for the coming terms and new subjects I wanted to take.

Although there was a high presence of engineers, that includes me, there is a good diversity among different backgrounds, career goals etc.

Is Sports or extracurricular popular on IIMB?

Extra-curricular activities are very popular. As part of the Sports Council, I can say the gyms are occupied, badminton courts filled with enthusiasts and football games continue in the rain as well, these are some examples of how popular sports can get. One of the reasons for the strong orientation towards them, lies in the fact that we have great facilities and/or have funds to provide towards maintaining good facilities for the students.

How Nature friendly is IIMB Campus?

Campus is very nature friendly. One can often see many taking strolls even late into the night. Parikrama and Pergola were favourite spots among students, I can honestly say that walking around campus made me feel like bringing the nature into my room. So, I had kept two plants in my room too.
